The Ozone 7 ‘ear button’ enables you to ensure that the volume of the original and the edited version are the same so that you can make an unbiased decision as to whether your changes has genuinely improved the overall sound. This makes an unbiased comparison difficult, as the human ear tends to think that the louder sound is automatically ‘better’, whereas in fact the edited sound might be worse, but simply louder. When you are comparing the original audio with the processed audio, it is likely that the treated audio will be louder than the original. The ‘ear button’ is an invaluable feature. Simply dragging them to a new position can change the module order and you can solo individual modules, or turn modules on or off completely. The default setting is for the signal to go on the equalizer first, then the dynamics section, the exciter, the stereo imager and finally the maximiser. The various modules are shown at the lower part of the program interface and they follow the flow of the audio signal. The presets ares very well designed and offer an ideal launch pad for further manipulation by the user – and you can, of course, save your own presets for instant recall at a later date. There is a generous selection of genre-specific presets ranging from ‘gentle acoustic’ to ‘funk electro’ and different modules are loaded that suits the appropriate genre. Ozone 7 includes numerous presets with recommended settings for many different recording genres. There has been a long-held view that digital recording can be too clinical and lack warmth, and these Vintage modules allow the user to dial-in some analogue warmth and character to a recording.
The addition of these new ‘vintage’ modules chimes with the current fashion for harking back to vintage recording methods and the revival in popularity of vinyl records. The Advanced edition also gives the user the facility to use all ten individual Ozone 7 components as separate plugins adding to the flexibility of the software. Whilst Standard is very powerful, the Advanced version also includes a new Vintage Tape module, Vintage Compressor, Codec Preview Facility and the iZotope Insight metering plugin. The Standard offers Dynamic EQ, Equalizer, Maximizer, Dynamics, Exciter, Stereo Imaging and now, with the latest update, adding a Vintage Limiter module and an MP3/AAC export facility. The program is available either in Standard or advanced editions. Even though Ozone 7 has a comprehensive range of tools, it also features AU/VST plug-in hosting, so you can also bring any favourite non-iZotope plugins you might have into the program. When operating, you can load in all of your tracks and save these as one project so that when you give yourself and your ears a much-needed break, your project is all saved to resume further work.
The standalone mode is a helpful option as it is a good idea sometimes to detach yourself from the DAW recording process and just concentrate your thoughts on the final master. Over the past few years, iZotope has firmly established Ozone as the go-to mastering program and it includes all the necessary tools together in one neat package.Īs with all iZotope products, the interface is very attractive and simple to navigate and, as with the previous version, you can operate Ozone 7 either in standalone mode or as a plugin within your DAW program (such as Cubase or Logic). Mastering is the last stage of audio production – when you take the fully mixed music tracks and apply the final EQ, balancing the levels for each song to ensure they all have the correct loudness.
